Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) is a true eagle (not a hawk) from the tropical Americas, notable for its vivid colors, which differ markedly between adult and immature birds. The male's courtship display is a dive with folded wings, and a climb, sometimes completing a loop. The pair will touch talons in flight as the female rolls on her back. The call is a high-pitched whee-oo-whee-oo. Though locally rare, it is not considered a threatened species due to its wide range.
This guy was gorgeous! He stared at me, fanning his fancy comb, as I sketched him. When I finished, he cocked his head at me, flew off, and made a call. Very majestic!
