Bitching about CATWOMAN #1 and RED HOOD #1

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 25, 2011, 1:27 AM

Well, I did another podcast with my friend ~shadowsofthought.  Catwoman #1 and Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 were soooooo atrocious!  They were horribly written, badly drawn, and confoundedly sexist!  Yes, I'm cussing and screaming again, but it's fairly coherent this time and less echoing.

We pretty much analyze Catwoman #1, page by page, panel by panel.  If you want to follow us as we talk about each page, please you don't buy this comic.  Please don't give writer Judd Winick any money for it.  Just download it.  Yes, it's that bad!  Why is it so bad?  Well, the simple answer is:  "Catwoman rapes Batman..."  (Official preview shots above.  Right click and View Image to see them in full view.)

We analyze Red Hood and the Outlaws #1, page by page, as we puzzle over the strange characterizations of Red Hood, Arsenal, and (most of all) Starfire, transforming an interesting, well-rounded character with decades of development into a mere "sex doll."  (Official preview shots above.  Right click and View Image to see them in full view.)

(Part three discussing "sexual liberation vs. sexual objectification" of both comics will be uploaded later on and I'll update this blog when it's ready.)

If they get a better artist, I'd be all for it. What I hate is that DC had said that the women in the NEW 52 will have practical costumes. I don't see that with Harley Quinn.

Despite this, there were several great titles. I really did love BATMAN (no subtitle beyond that), BATGIRL, BATWOMAN, BATWING, JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL, ANIMAL MAN, AQUAMAN, WONDER WOMAN, SUPERGIRL, GREEN LANTERN CORPS, SWAMP THING, DEMON KNIGHTS, and ALL-STAR WESTERN.

Thank you for another great podcast.

...But good god what have they done to Starfire? That is absolutely unacceptable. I mean, her costume was a tad, well, whorish to begin with, but she didn't normally go around literally whoring herself out like that. That's completely against what her character used to be. And wasn't Dick her boyfriend/love interest for most of the continuity of the Teen Titans? God. Why can't these people think to market these comics to girls? Do they think girls like looking at drawings of women with quadruple D cup size, tiny waistlines, and can bend their bodies into impossibly flexible poses? My friend just made a point about Starfire's "blindness": wouldn't she remember people who weren't really "human"? Is Beast Boy technically human while in animal shape? What about Cyborg, or Raven, or really any other "metahuman" that usually made up any of the versions of the Teen Titans? Ugh. Okay, my rant is done.

Her costume was always very "open" and that works with that they established in canon. Tamaranians are not shy about the body because they find it a beautiful thing. They're sexually open but not promiscuous because they consider sex as "lovemaking"; it's exposing your soul to the other rather than animal actions. When they do have sex, they are BONDED to that person for life; they will not (and CANNOT) be with another because of that. Even though they were engaged but never married, Starfire bonded with Dick Grayson and, because of this, she's off-limits to everyone else -- and that would include Jason Todd and Roy Harper, but somehow that was FORGOTTEN.

Her blindness, assuming she is truly blind, she would recongize people by smell. Smell is actually more identifible and unique than sight and touch for 98% of animals. She would smell Beast Boy as human with barnyard traits; Cyborg would smell more "dead," like a half-man, half-machine would; Raven, well, it's rather established (in other books) that people with "magic" have a unique smell, rather "otherworldly" smell, because they tap into worlds/dimensions that normal humans can't.

Honestly, I have NO IDEA how CATWOMAN #1 and RED HOOD #1 is suppose to appeal to women because it's just degrading to women. It comes off as softcore porn; the internet is already a giant database for porn, so I don't really need it in my comics or cartoons. Just saying. We will actually have a third podcast that discusses the line between what is sexual liberation and what is sexual objectification. It's not that I have a problem with women having sex; they can have sex as much as they want to with whomever they want to, but the fact is that...there needs to be RELATIONSHIPS. Generally, people like to establish relationships of trust, romance, banter, fliration, some form of friendly interaction, a little thing called characterization, before sex even plays into it. Both male and females do this. The fact that NONE OF THIS HAPPENS is really just the male idealization of what "sexually liberated" women would THINK they would do, making them women with dicks or guys with vaginas, rather than what women (human beings in general) actually WOULD do.
